I bought Ooma from Amazon recently. Now I can listen to my voicemails from anywhere in the world.I am transferring my phone number to Ooma so that I can ditch my Ma Bell's landline altogether. In my case, besides the jack the Ooma base is connected to, I need only one more active wall outlet which is where the scout is connected to.
My setup ison a Comcast cable internet. After a simple configuration in the Ooma website (what they call as lounge), a voicemail left by a caller comes in as an email attachment. Installation was a snap.
Then my multi-handset VTech phone is connected to the scout and voila, I have Ooma service from the entire house from all the handsets.I have disabled the built-in answering machine on my VTech phone system base unit so that Ooma voicemail kicks in. Ooma base plugs in between the cable modem and the router (wireless in my case) and is tucked away out of sight. Ooma base needs to be connected to a wall phone jack so that it can power all the phone outlets in the house.
Very convenient. All-in-all, I am very happy in the two weeks I have been using Ooma.
I did a lot of research & reading reviews before buying, trying to find the "catch" but didnt find any. The phone is exactly as described. I price shopped around everywhere & ended up paying $229/shipped. Do some price shopping, with the holidays coming I now have seen special offers for $199. Its clear as a bell, more clear than any landline. I'll never pay a phone bill again.
#1 - it cost $. I enjoy the "chimes" that start the dial tone and it is nice to have caller-id and call waiting again (had left that off of the COX phone plan). We are not heavy phone users, nor do we make any international calls so I can't comment on the call quality overseas. I've been using Ooma for a few months and haven't had any issues at all. #2 - it took me > 4 weeks and I started to get frustrated since it would take a few days to figure out that I was missing some ridiculous # for my existing account that I had never known was even there. However it is AWESOME to pick up my landline and make a call anywhere in the US without thinking twice about "long distance". I also have a cellphone that has "free" long distance, but it also has limited minutes. The only knock I give Ooma is the number porting process. Frustrated, but a one time thing. The bottom line is Ooma has a great service and I'm tickled that I no longer pay a "phone company". Sure - you can pay for the premium services - which I did for the first year - but after that we'll likely just keep the basic service. What are you waiting for - the price is right for the 2008 christmas season, jump on board for a nice discount.
I have used this device for 2 weeks now and here is my setup and experience.1. All outgoing call go thru the OOMA so no charges.3. Connected by landline to the OOMA so that the landline is connedted seamlessly and I do not have to change numbers. Also I have Phone service during power outages.2. Called my landline company and changed my service to the very basic. The unit was very easy to set up and voice quality is very good. So far I have not had any problem.
I bought this phone with the intention of just using the free lifetime phone service but I have decided that it I am so impressed with it that I am going to pony up the $99 a year for all the options and second line. This is an excellent product, and hands down a must have item. My main concern was using my fax machine with this device and I can tell you that it works without a hitch. I have had my ooma for several months now and do not have a single compaint. It is superior to vonage and easily equal to the cable phone service that I had before ooma. I have not had a single issue with this phone service at all. It has never dropped a call, the call clarity is excellent , and I really enjoy the dial tone.Just buy it you wont be disappointed.I have a cable modem and not DSL
